If you want an Indian meal, and you love wine, it is like having two heads that face opposite directions. Common wisdom says that wine doesn’t go well with spicy Indian food. But what if you want to keep trying? Actually, the banana leaf just hits the sweet spot. Have mild south Indian tiffin items like idli, dosa and kozhakattai— google for meaning. Drink well balanced Pinot Noirs. Works really well. Had a great tasting of Hirsch Vineyard wines. All pinots. All from Sonoma. Our wine group loved tasting the subtle variations between wines from the Reserve and the San Andreas Fault wines. Announcing Project LooM. What is it about the saree that evokes such love amongst Indians? Project LooM is something I co-created. It has been two years in the making. Project LooM is a partnership between lovers of Indian handloom. The goal is to showcase and celebrate the people, places and processes behind India's wonderful handwoven sarees. Each cluster is an edition. Like magazine issues. The first edition is Kanchipuram, then Chanderi, then West Bengal, and on it goes. Project LooM could not have happened without the support of the following people. Ajoy Chawla and Shyamala Ramanan at Titan/Taneira for the vision, the carte blanche sign-off that they gave me to run with the project. One of the most touching experiences of my life. I walked towards the flag hoisting celebrations at the hotel. To my delight, Maria at the front office, asked me if I would hoist the flag. It was like being enveloped in a hug. 50 women. Uncommon women. Gathered from all over the world. For a weekend off dancing, conversation, laughter, and love. The Mt. Holyoke Alumanae symposium in Asia. Held for the first time in India. Swipe right for more videos. The staff of the Taj Jai Mahal Palace hotel were simply incredible. They had a big fat Indian wedding on the grounds but took great care of us. Ended with a wonderful yoga and wellness session. What an amazing weekend. My knees hurt so bad. I did a 12 mile bike ride with Dandyhorse Bike tours from 11 AM to 4 PM. It was very good. We covered a whole lot of ground from the Castro district to the lovely homes in Haight Ashbury to The Mill, one of the best bakeries in SFO. Discover some lovely soaps in Cliff’s variety store in the same road as the legendary Castro theater. Saw a classic SF seen with a truck parked in front of the Victorian homes. Great logo designs for a beer company. The thing about the hilly streets of San Francisco are the views that spring up and surprise you. The Asian Art Museum has an exhibit of Mithila paintings that is fantastic. Don’t miss the documentaries of the woman painters. I also did some birdwatching in some of the city parks. Rounded off the evening at the Italian Homemade Company. Good pasta. Lousy tiramisu. Had the house Nebbiolo. After that, comedy. Cheaper Than Therapy is a good stand up comedy show at the Sheldon Theater. Good timing too. 7 to 830 pm. I liked Samantha, the producer and warm up act. Hmmm. Where do we go for breakfast today? We walked about 2 miles to Dolores park. Then walk up and down these hills and valleys. Great views. Ended up in a Restaurant with a long line outside. Always a good sign. Rye toast. Drip coffee. Meyer lemon in hot water. Soft scrambled eggs. And of course the avocado that seems to be an every plate these days. Don’t get the potatoes.
