Self introductions

January 19th, 2011|Teaching|

Today, we talked about how to introduce ourselves.  About half of the class got up on stage and introduced yourselves.  We all gave feedback on the introductions.  We talked about tone, body language, posture, and mirroring.  We assessed each other on eye contact, whether they took visual cues from the other person, and how engaging the conversation was.  We talked about balancing information about ourselves with asking questions about the other. Questions for the class: 1. What did we miss? 2. Do you think non-verbal communication is as important as they say it is? 3. What about the use of [...]

The Good Life

December 7th, 2010|Comment Essays|

I write a weekly column called "The Good Life," for Mint. It's the first time I have done a column and it has been a humbling experience. I've learnt a lot. Some pieces I like more than others. Some are extremely hard to write and I do a thousand rewrites while others come out just like that. They are available at the paper's website. I am not sure how to upload them all to this site, so for now, please click here to view my columns.

Y. 2003, pp. 223.Shobha Narayan is no stranger to the readers of Little India. Her memories of a cross country road trip from New York to Los Angeles that she took with husband and her grandmother, a strict vegetarian, was published in the magazine a few years back and resonated with many readers. How many of us have not stood glumly in the midst of yet another bustling reststop food court debating between the indigestion quotient [...]

List of columns in The National, Abu Dhabi

July 26th, 2010|Comment Essays|

I recently became a business columnist for The National in Abu Dhabi. My pieces appear every Sunday. It's challenging but keeps my juices flowing. My editor, Rupert Wright is an Englishman who has a fine instinct for how to make a piece better without removing the 'writerly' voice. Here are the first few that appeared. Cameron puts on a show of the best of British in India 07/31/10 Britain’s prime minister David Cameron was in India a few days ago and the contrast with other visiting leaders could not have been more obvious. Canny advertisers are switched on to changing [...]

One Family’s Journey back home.

March 26th, 2010|Return to India|

Knowledge @ Wharton has been one of my most satisfying journalistic experiences. My editor, Mukul Pandya, sits in Philadelphia at the Wharton School. He has taken chances on me and allowed me to write pieces that aren't an obvious fit for a business publication but ended up getting a lot of gratifying feedback for both K@W and for me. I am listing below all the pieces I've done for them and will keep adding to this page, and well as upload separate pieces. I start with what I call my magnum opus-- the Return to India piece I did for [...]
