Bangalore Talkies: Uniquely Bangalore: the nipattu

August 19th, 2021|Arts | Culture, Comment Essays|

About the much-loved crunchy snack that Bangaloreans reach for When the monsoon makes its appearance in Bangalore, as it has done now, the oil starts sizzling. South Indian kitchens keep their tryst with their gastronomic destiny, not wholly or in full measure (given the number of people who are on intermittent fasting diets these days) but very substantially. When it rains, South Indian kitchens start taking out their deep-frying kadhais. This moment comes, not rarely because every South Indian Mami (Aunty) worth her salt will deep-fry papad or ‘happala’ pretty much everyday. It is a neat trick, performed in most [...]

Let’s talk about South Asian mental health

August 8th, 2021|Relationships|

Just because mental health issues are not visible doesn’t mean they don’t exert a pull on your psyche. For a culture that is supposedly warm and family-oriented, many families here in India are adept at dismissing individual feelings and emotions, all in the name of being practical and rational.

Being an atheist as a teenager and agnostic as a young adult, Shoba says she turned to religion late in life. [...]

Fine wine and stereotypes

July 17th, 2021|Comment Essays, Food | Drink|

But what are fine wines really? It depends on who you ask. This report categorizes “fine wines“ as those that are priced at or above $75. This is a sensible rule.  A winemaker friend in Napa, [...]

July 16th, 2021|Arts | Culture, Comment Essays|

Pitting two powerful women (relatives) against each other In a story worthy of a Rajinikanth thriller, two women-- sisters in law at that-- are the main players in a grisly gang murder.   On June 24th, in the old Bengaluru area of Cottonpete, former councillor, Rekha Kadiresh, who was slated to win the upcoming city council polls was hacked to death 17 times on a crowded street in broad daylight.  Within a day, using CCTV footage, the Bangalore police arrested 5 people including Lambu Peter, who allegedly perpetrated the deed. They also arrested Mala Rajkannan, the ganglord of the area.   [...]
